James is a partner in the Employment and Pensions Group. He qualified in New Zealand and specialised in employment law there before transferring to the UK. Prior to joining Field Fisher Waterhouse in 2003, he gained experience dealing with a broad range of both contentious and non-contentious employment work while based in house for a large public sector employer.

James focuses on providing change management advice, regularly advising on complex public and private sector out-sourcing and reorganisation issues. He also has extensive experience in the handling of complex unfair dismissal, discrimination and trade union cases, from the Employment Tribunal level through to the Court of Appeal, and at the Central Arbitration Committee. In addition James has expertise and advises frequently on employment status issues, consultancy agreements, senior executive service agreements, including international contracts, restrictive covenants, working time issues and data protection and privacy issues in employment.

James regularly presents at seminars and workshops as part of the Employment and Pensions Group’s annual training programme. He has also spoken at external conferences on a variety of employment law issues and provides in house training for clients. James has been frequently quoted in newspapers (including the Wall Street Journal) and other publications on employment law issues. James also regularly writes for publications such as Employers Law and Personnel Today and his articles have been featured in the Employment Law Journal and the Financial Times.
