Contact: Nicholas.Thorpe@ffw.com
Nick Thorpe trained with the firm and has specialised in employment law since qualification in 2001.
Nick’s practice covers both public and private sector work (with a particular focus on the retail, financial services and real estate). He also provides employment advice and support to the firm’s large Japanese client base.
Nick’s public sector work includes both contentious and non-contentious matters. On the non-contentious side, he has advised on the TUPE aspects of several public sector outsourcing contracts. He also handles a large number of Tribunal matters, including complex discrimination and dismissal claims, and recently had an appeal before the Employment Appeal Tribunal relating to disability discrimination.
Nick advises private sector clients on a wide array of day-to-day employment issues, including disciplinary and grievances. He also provides strategic advice on collective matters, most recently in relation to the settlement of a collective dispute following a company acquisition and on collective redundancies.
Nick presents seminars and workshops on a regular basis as part of the Employment and Pensions Group annual training programme. Nick also has a particular focus on the retail sector and is a member of the Central London Retail Personnel Group (CLRPG), regularly hosting legal update events for that Group. He is responsible for the firm’s quarterly “Retail People” email alerter, which focuses on employment law issues in the retail sector. His knowledge and experience in this sector has led to regular quotes in Retail Week on subjects as diverse as holiday entitlement, store violence and director liability. Nick is also the co-author of the financial services chapter of Xpert HR’s employment law manual.
